The Natural World Revealed Through Science

How do we know what is true and what is false? Should we believe a person or a book claiming to have exclusive access to secret, hidden knowledge? Should we “go with our gut” and believe whatever “feels right” to us as individuals?  Until the scientific method came along, these were the only options available.

In just the last few hundred years human beings have discovered a new way to investigate what is probably true, and what probably isn’t. Since the advent of the scientific method, we have made incredible progress in understanding of the natural world, and ourselves.

The Scientific Method

The greatest discovery humans ever made was the system of critical thinking, hypotheses, and testable conjecture that is called the Scientific Method. This article discusses what it really is, why it is so important, and features a great explanation by the famous physicist: David Deutsch.

The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection

The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection is one of the deepest insights ever stumbled upon by humanity. The theory proposed by Charles Darwin has provided us with a natural explanation of why there is so much life on this planet and why it is so complex. Included with the overview is a presentation by the esteemed evolutionary geneticist Jerry Coyne on the evidence for evolution.

Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Astronomy

Pre-scientific thought placed humanity at the center of the cosmos. The truth is infinitely less vain, and infinitely more wonderful. Here we offer a little peek into the world of cosmology, astronomy, and astrophysics which will without a doubt humble anyone that takes the time to get caught up. A wonderful talk by famous cosmologist Lawrence Krauss shows us how far we have come.

Particle Physics and Quantum Mechanics

The field of quantum mechanics (which is often totally misunderstood) studies the smallest constituents of matter and energy that make up the fabric of our reality. Nevermind all of the “New Age” crap that quacks and charlatans are trying to sell you on the back of such a wonderful field of science. Instead, let Brian Cox walk you through the details as he describes the biggest science experiment ever undertaken by human beings: The Large Hadron Collider.
